Abstract
Discrete trial training (DTT) is an individualized method of instruction that is foundational to the clinical practice of Applied Behavior Analysis. When presenting choices for reinforcement during a DTT session, there appear to be two plausible options for when the client may choose: either before task completion or after task completion. The overall conclusion drawn by previous researchers was that the relative effectiveness of either condition may be idiosyncratic. The purpose of this present study was to replicate and extend Blackman (2023) teaching only new skill acquisition targets, using non-edible tangible reinforcers, and including preassessment data for all participants. Two children receiving ABA services were recruited from a local clinical site. Lincoln and Jake, both 4-year old boys. Lincoln mastered skill acquisition targets in fewer trials in the Post-Task condition, while Jake reached mastery quicker in the Pre-Task condition. Both participants demonstrated superior performance in their preferred condition compared to in their less preferred condition. The application of these findings in clinical practice could improve client outcomes while equally promoting ethical service delivery.
