Abstract
In brief, bisphosphonic acid ligands were synthesized and used to create pillared zirconium phosphonate-phosphates of varying degrees of hybridity. These compounds were characterized extensively and subjected to further interlayer swelling through both ion and acid-base exchange. Comparisons were then made with post-synthetically modified zirconium phosphates with polyethylene glycol diglycidylether pillars. The extent of swelling, stability, and exchange are reported and discussed at length with potential directions for future research explored.
