Abstract

Based on a sample of 84 Chinese international students (54% female participants, Mage = 20.49, SD = 1.43) in a U.S. university, the current study aims to integrate group criticism research with facework and collective face research. An inductive thematic analysis was conducted exploring these students’ online written responses to group criticism elicited by either an ingroup or outgroup critic in a laboratory experiment. Four themes are identified including: 1) acknowledging at first and then counterarguing, 2) the direct corrective and confronting approach; 3) elaborated defending; and 4) collective face concerns calling for a superordinate identity. The study sheds new light on Chinese international students’ responses to group criticism threatening their group image in intercultural communication contexts.
