Abstract
“To the victor belong the spoils!” This principle traditionally has justified the looting of art treasures and cultural artifacts belonging to conquered peoples. War trophies are tangible symbols of conquest and may enrich their new owners. But is this conventional view ethical? To whom should such objects belong?
Colleges and universities have a role to play in the international debate over the cultural, legal, and ethical significance of war trophies.
