College leaders must view their responsibilities as a coherent whole

Coherence is not a notable characteristic of higher education. Our institutions are in flux, loosely coupled, complex, and often in crisis. And today, many colleges and universities, both public and private, are in serious financial straits.

What kind of leaders do we need in this challenging higher-education environment?
