As We Are

Artist Statement

Your childhood serves as more than a site of memories from your past - it forms the building blocks that shape you into the person you are today. Through this series I am creating a visual narrative that reflects significant aspects of my identity and how they were developed throughout my adolescence. Each painting functions as an experiment where I revisit distinct childhood experiences by analyzing and reflecting upon them as filtered through my present perception and past comprehension.

The playful tone of my work is juxtaposed against the darker events I experienced as a child. I point to both difficult and warm memories, but do not want my work to take on a somber tone. Ambiguous imagery and evidence of my painting process evokes feelings of nostalgia and unease, creating an immersive and distinctive representation of the development of my identity.

I am more intrigued by the process of creation than the final product. My exploration of layering tactile surfaces by incorporating various mediums and textiles allows me to represent both distressing and fulfilling memories through my painting process. Yarn and bright saturated colors are often associated with childhood but when combined with thick mediums and unique textures, they amplify the tension between my memories and current frame of vision.
