Abstract
Blockchain is a relatively new technology that can facilitate the administration of several different classifications of transactions. A blockchain consists of a series of digital blocks connected along a linear time sequence. One major potential application of blockchain technology is to facilitate real estate transactions. Features of blockchain that are especially useful in real estate include its digitally robust code and internal protocols that lead to a level of security and automatically executing smart contracts. Despite the significant potential applications of blockchain to the real estate industry, perceptions, and knowledge of blockchain technology among professionals in the real estate industry was largely based on individual opinions; little previous empirical research had been done to systematically characterize the perceptions of this group of people. This study attempted to fully characterize the opinions and perceptions of real estate professionals about blockchains and their integration into the real estate industry. The study consisted of a series of semi-structured, standardized interviews of systemically selected participants in the real estate industry. A total of 15 real estate executives provided responses to semi-structured interviews. The final themes were Opportunities for Adoption of Blockchain Technology in Real Estate: Prior Conditions and Perceived Characteristics and Challenges to Blockchain Adoption: Rejection and Recognition of Problems, Needs, and Prior Practice, The results of this study were invaluable to understanding the process of integrating blockchain into the real estate industry, suggesting the opportunities for the adoption of blockchain technology has a potential for improvement in the industry.
