Abstract

Fletcher's seminal 1993 paper explores the dynamics of pressure-controlled valves critical in sound production for woodwind and brass instruments and animal vocalizations.1 The study examines four simple valve configurations, determined by the effect of overpressures on valve openings. It identifies conditions under which these valves can sustain self-sustained oscillations, particularly when the ducts connected to the valves are shorter than a quarter of the wavelength at the valve's resonant frequency. The research focuses on the initiation of small amplitude oscillations, setting the stage for understanding larger amplitude nonlinear oscillations.
